What’s The Best Investment You Can Make In A Recession?

You can choose not to participate in a recession!

What is the best investement you can make right now? Is it APPL, GOOG, SBUX, AMZN?  Nope, it’s YRBZ.  That stands for “Your Business” here at Make Marketing Happen.  There are only a few things you can trust when it comes to the financial volatility we are currently experiencing on Wall Street.  One of those is your own hard work.  Gone are the days of depending on anyone or anything to make sure you are financially secure.  But hope is not lost.  You have the power to take control of your marketing, your business and your life and it starts with marketing.  Working hard is very different than working smart.  Here are a few things to invest in your business now so you can expect a return on your investment and not a return of your investment.

  • Hire the right people.  Hiring a new employee is a big deal for a small business.  Doing favors for friends and family members is a bad idea unless they really are the right fit for your company.  Identify your needs and seek the right person rather than trying to find a role for someone you like.  Smart hires will help you grow your business.  And if they really are talented, let them flourish and don’t hold them back!  Micromanaging is the quickest way to stunt their development.
  • Take advantage of virtual employees.  Because everyone has high speed internet and a smart phone, you don’t always need to bring in full time employees.  You can outsource administrative assistants with companies like Virtual Solutions 4 You and even marketing with a company like Cedar Creek Marketing.  Before you hire an employee or outsource a service, weigh the pros and cons of each.  It might make sense for you to have a marketing team in-house while outsourcing your website.
  • Re-assess your priorities EVERYDAY.  In order to stay focused and productive, you need to examine your to-do list every single day.  What is going to generate revenue quickly?  What project can you hand off to a capable employee?  Don’t spend time learning Photoshop so you can make a new flyer.  Send it off to a designer.  Don’t waste hours writing copy if writing isn’t your talent.  Find a good copywriter and let them take care of it.  The more you can delegate projects to the appropriate people, the faster and better it will get done.
Take this advice seriously.  You cannot rely on the markets, the government or anyone else to provide for your family.  Take control what you can and make the most of it.  Need more advice thriving in a “recession”?  Contact Charley and I for a consultation.  Don’t believe this stuff works?  Check out the story of DUI attorney Bob Battle who has “chosen not to participate in the recession”.  So what are you waiting for?  Close your E-Trade account and start marketing!
